HTC Android Receive Upgrade to Android 2.3 Gingerbread

Despite the debacle with LG and the Android 2.3 Gingerbread upgrade, HTC has gone on to officially announce that a number of the company’s current-generation Android smartphones will get an upgrade from their current Android version–Android 2.2 Froyo–to Google’s Android 2.3 Gingerbread. According to HTC, “We are excited about the OS update coming for Android, and while HTC will definitely have some phones running this OS, we do not have a specific timeframe for new phones or updates at this time. Please stay tuned for more details.”

The company was not specific as to which phones would receive updates to Android 2.3, nor did HTC release a timeline on when an upgrade would be expected for release. It is anticipated that newer models will get the upgrade first, and those models include the T-Mobile G2, myTouch 4G, Desire HD, and Desire Z, which is a variant of the G2. The company will most likely roll our new phones with Android 2.3 Gingerbread as well.
In the Android environment, updates are usually controlled by carriers and manufacturers, despite the fact that the OS is free for use by carriers and manufacturers. This problem has led to a problem known as fragmentation where certain devices that do not receive OS upgrades may lack in newer features or functionality. With devices prior to Android 2.2 Froyo, those that did not get the Android 2.2 upgrade were left out of features such as Adobe Flash 10.1 Mobile support and tethering.
Historically, in the case of phone OS upgrades, manufacturers and carriers usually offer one or two major OS upgrades to a phone model. This will encourage users of older handsets to purchase hardware upgrades. Also, as the mobile industry is rapidly evolving, some software features would not be compatible with older hardware models, and this may be an incentive to have customers who desire maximum compatibility and functionality to also invest in the latest hardware.

TELUS and Koodo Mobile Samsung Nexus S now available

TELUS and Koodo Mobile Samsung Nexus S now available
If you live in Canada and have managed to hold off importing a Samsung Nexus S from the U.S. then your patience has paid off. TELUS has now posted the device up on their site for ordering and as was rumored, pricing is as follows:
No contract - $549.991 year contract - $499.992 year contract - $449.993 year contract - $179.99
The no contract price is a little higher then what was given at launch for the U.S version but -- I guess that's the cost Canadians pay for also having AT&T compatible 3G on their versions. Now, question is who in the U.S is going to be importing one from Canada to use on AT&T? In other TELUS related news, Best Buy also has TELUS owned Koodo Mobiles version showing on their site as well. [Best Buy, Koodo, TELUS]

HTC Inspire 4G case review | androidyes

Case-Mate Barely There case for the Inspire 4G
Some of us don't need a big, bulky case that protects our phones from rough treatment, and prefer a slim case that keeps things from getting scratched and slips easily into a pocket or purse.  The Case-Mate Barely There case for the Inspire 4G is that case.
It's a one-piece, very thin (hey, it's barely there!) hard, yet flexible and impact resistant shell that neatly covers the rear of your Inspire 4G or Desire HD.  It's designed to leave all the ports and buttons on the top and bottom of the phone open, and the volume switch on the side is cut-out for easy use.  It's simple to put on and take off, and is going to do a great job keeping the back of your phone from getting dings or scratches.  While the case covers the back and corners, the included Case-Mate screen protector covers the big 4.3-inch piece of glass up front.
If you're looking for a case that's slim and attractive, you should have a look at the Case-Mate Barely there case.  You can find it in the Android Central store, in black, pink, white, and mirrored silver for $17.95.

Although we recently had to unleash some bad news for Motorola Bravo owners addressing the delay of Froyo, that doesn't mean Motorola has stopped working on the update altogether. Samsung Finland Say, Gingerbread for European Galaxy S coming | androidyes

Samsung
In the latest chapter in the ongoing saga S Galaxy Gingerbread, Nokia of Finland has updated the official blog with news that Finnish Galaxy S owners (and other Europeans, too, probably) will get an update in "mid April". Samsung added that the update Gingerbread is in the final stages of testing.

This is more or less jives with what we hear from the operator, England Three Gingerbread who expect to push to customers S Galaxy within "several weeks". If you can not wait an additional seven days (or more, depending on your carrier) and you feel brave, you can always check the Galaxy leaked S Gingerbread build that we reported several weeks ago.

Regional carrier Alltel this morning is pimping a new line to fill Android. It has a high-end but the entry of aging, and low partner-Enders. Let's break it down:

Motorola's still unannounced Droid X2 with Froyo - Android 2.2.2

Motorola Droid X2
See what we have here - why, that's not Motorola's still-unannounced-Droid X2. We do not have a whole lot of new information to go by, but it fits with the leak before, and we saw it walking Froyo - Android 2.2.2, exactly - although that may very well change before this one will on the shelf. It carries the same styling Droid X as last year's model, complete with physical buttons and humped back, and we see the HDMI out on the side microUSB ports. Around back we see 8MP shooter with dual flash setup, and the words "HD Video". Still no sign of LTE on it, but we will not govern with the perfect first. This is all according to what we heard before about the specifications X2 Droid's.

As for when we will see it? We have heard that the leaked roadmap from a week ago was not entirely accurate, and that some phones may drop faster than we think, that would be fine by us.

Hit a break for the rest of the pics. You will be glad you did. Thank you, Anonymous!

webOS 3.0 screenshots

HP TouchPad. Bing!
Our buddy Derek to the PreCentral has shown from a few screenshots from 3.0 webOS emulator today received today from an anonymous source. It certainly looks like great news for fans of WebOS, and some things there will make Android fans do a double take.
We're not going to sit here and tell people copied other people - there are only so many ways to do the right thing, and it looks like a WebOS 3.0 is to do some of them. There is a nice full-screen browser with a minimalist navigation and control areas at the top, and a virtual keyboard looks good spacing and capitalization does not force on you when you do not want it. The application looks very nice chat. This is a multi-pane interface with a large area for the content of your messages, and we assume that your friends list will fill the left. Google has done the same to the original Talk application in the Honeycomb, and work really.
Regional Settings quickly bring an interesting idea - you can see the influence of Matias Duarte has been on both webOS 3.0 and Honeycomb. They are not exactly the same, but there are many similarities there (check out the comparison after the break). It's not a bad thing, because they both look great. Easy access and functionality combined with sleek looks is something fans of both platforms can appreciate.
The last thing to note, and not surprising given HP's strong relationships with Microsoft, is that WebOS 3.0 uses Bing for their maps application. Like it or hate it, HPalm will make for a strong partner for maps Bing, and Derek speculated that HP can partner with Bing in the search space as well. Anyone who has used both Maps and Google Maps Bing knew it was lose them, and I'm not going to get rid of optimized tablet webOS version 3.0 directly from Google Maps if the market is big enough to justify it.
All in all a similar 3.0 WebOS nice upgrade to the platform, and even I was curious to see how it runs on HP's new touchpad

Andy Rubin - the father of Android | androidyes

Andy Rubin
Andy Rubin -- the father of Android -- has taken to the Android Developer blog to shed a little light on what's happening regarding Honeycomb, any changes in Google's open-source policy, and fragmentation. The post is titled "I think I'm having a Gene Amdahl moment," referring to the former IBM exec who coined the phrase "fear, uncertainty and doubt" -- aka FUD.  You'll definitely want to read the entire post, but we'll break it down here:
"We don’t believe in a 'one size fits all' solution. ... Quality and consistency continue to be top priorities.""As always, device makers are free to modify Android to customize any range of features for Android devices.""Our approach remains unchanged: there are no lock-downs or restrictions against customizing UIs. There are not, and never have been, any efforts to standardize the platform on any single chipset architecture.""We continue to be an open source platform and will continue releasing source code when it is ready."
Again, those are just bullet points cherry picked by us. Read the entire post. And then take a deep breath and read it again. And while you might not like the answers -- or maybe you don't think really Rubin answered anything at all -- Rubin, and by extension Android and Google, did one thing we called for in last week's Android Central Podcast: cast a little transparency on what's been a bit of a murky period for Android's "open" nature. Developer claims Google pulled PSX4Droid | androidyes

 Final Fantasy on Android
We reported in late March that popular PlayStation emulator PSX4Droid had been pulled from the Android Market in an almost Apple-like manner, and now the developer has fired back. ZodTTD has decided to host .apk downloads right on his own website and has also made the app free for anyone to download. In addition, it seems Google has placed some holds and restrictions on his developer account, which is making it difficult for him to put more apps on the Market and profit from others he already has.
This entire episode as a whole has not been good for the Android ecosystem as being free of Apple's arbitrary restrictions on applications in its own AppStore has been one of the incentives to develop apps like emulators for Android. There are legal uses for emulators and the ROMs they run so it makes the issue even more confusing. In the meantime, ZodTTD, might we suggest the Amazon AppStore? [ZodTTD via Engadget]

New Verizon Incredible 2 pics show it booted up, ready to rock Froyo | androidyes

Verizon HTC Incredible 2
Well, well, what have we here? An all-new, hot-off-the-press, get-it-while-it's-hot look at the upcoming (and still not actually announced) Incredible 2 on Verizon. From what we can tell, the body's exactly the same as we saw on the HTC Incredible S at Mobile World Congress (see our hands-on here). Same rounded corners, same plateaued battery cover (which we still really like). But this one's all done up in Verizon duds, and that makes us all tingly inside.
Flip it over, and we see the same 8-megapixel camera with dual flash, and the ever-comforting "with Google" logo.
We also get another look at the HTC keyboard (which remains one of our favorites), confirmation that indeed we're dealing with ADR6350, for those of you who keep up on your HTC code numbers, and this one's running Android 2.2.1 at the moment. Whether it'll launch with that, well, we'll see (and keep our fingers crossed for something a tad newer).
And speaking of release dates. Nothing official, of course, but that leaked Verizon roadmap we saw a week or so ago mentions April 28. That said, we've heard that roadmap might already be out of date, and we might be treated to a phone or two a little sooner rather than later. Will the Incredible 2 fall into that category? And is that actually its name? We'll just have to see.
We've got a nice little handful of Incredible 2 pics after the break, if you're into that sort of thing.
